A short course designed to encourage you to consider the ways you can express mood, emotion and your own uniqueness in your photographs. There will be discussion about the work of some contemporary photographers. Then camera operations and exposure options will be briefly reviewed before you delve into advanced control of light, colour etc, to be practised in an early morning sunrise photo shoot on One Tree Hill. | Life Drawing |
Beginners Class: Explore figure drawing through a series of exercises, looking at proportion, basic anatomy and technique. An opportunity to develop both your drawing and observational skills. Suited to beginners and those with some experience.
Intermediate Class: for those reasonably comfortable with the basics of drawing the figure from life. Longer, more challenging poses will allow for greater exploration of the figure. Emphasis will be given to more finished renderings. Tutor, James Wakelin is a professional illustrator and tutor (see: www.illustr8.co.nz). Bring A2 drawing pad or similar large format paper, a kneadable putty eraser and pencils (HB, 2B, 6B) and an easel if you wish to use one. Models’ fees included in course cost.

| Landscape Painting in Oils |
Take home a beautiful painting at the end of this step-by-step introduction to painting landscapes in oils, under guidance of professional artist, Steve Marsh (see http://stevemarsh.vc.net.nz). You will need some confidence in your drawing skills, but painting experience is not necessary. Wear your painting gear and bring a note book, pen, easel (small desk top easel will suffice - $20 from night school) and rags (to clean equipment at end of class). Also required: a 12” x 16” canvas coated with 2 coats of gesso ($12 from night school) and the following series 577 long flat bristle brushes: two each of sizes 12, 14, 16; three each of sizes 4, 6, 8, 10; two each of round size 1 or 2 (bundle of brushes $20 from night school). Fee includes oil paint.

| Portrait Painting |
If you would love to learn techniques for painting portraits, this class is for you! Suitable for beginners - drawing skills not required. Sessions will cover composition, an introduction to materials, how to mix and apply acrylic paint and basic colour theory. Bring an easel (optional). Bring a 2H and 4B pencil, an approx 30 cm (12") canvas. Acrylic paints (red, yellow, blue, green, brown, purple, black and white (large tube). Brushes (1 each of small, medium and large round tipped brushes - synthetic, hog hair, sable or similar). Sewing – Next Step
For students with basic sewing skills. By the end of this course you will have completed a garment which includes a zip and/or buttonholes. Bring to first session: your sewing machine, pattern and fabric, Pattern should be chosen for “Easy” to “Medium” level of difficulty, i.e. a shift dress, basic shirt, unlined jacket, or trousers which don’t require close tailoring. No linings, plaids, stripes, stretch or couture! Ensure your fabric complies with directions on pattern envelope. Enrolments open to adults and teens 14+ (12+ if enrolling with an adult). | Pacific Island Dance – Samoan |
Learn a Samoan dance sequence drawn from traditional Samoan movements and influenced by modern world views. Two forms of Samoan dance will be covered: 1) Samoan Siva - this is a dance which is performed, usually standing, and enacts everyday activities with graceful wrists, hand movements and beautiful smiley faces. You will also learn meanings of many traditional actions that are still used today. 2) Sasa - a seated dance mainly using body percussion to the beat of the drummer. This dance is upbeat and fun as you can get creative with actions and the rhythm of the beat. Tutor: Charlene Tedrow. Open to adults and teens 12+.

| Pilates |
Pilates is a non-impact method of muscle conditioning which emphasizes controlled movements and stretches to develop strong and flexible muscles. Pilates develops torso strength, limb and spinal flexibility, body awareness and postural control and breathing. It is an excellent tool for strengthening weak muscles, stretching tight muscles, post-pregnancy reconditioning and injury rehabilitation. When five days working days notice is given, fees may be transferred to another class at no charge. If you require a refund, a $20 administration fee is payable.

| If Your Course Does Not Meet Expectations |
Your satisfaction is important to us. If you are dissatisfied with the quality of tuition on your course, or if you feel the course was advertised incorrectly, please let us know. You should do so as early as possible after the start of your course and every attempt will be made to resolve the issue.

| Public Holidays |
Courses do not run on Public Holidays, or during long weekends. Courses do run on evenings preceding long weekends.

| Late Enrolments |
If a course is not already full we will enrol students at the Reception Office 15 minutes before a course starts. Please leave a message for co-ordinator earlier in the day, to make sure there is space and enable course materials to be prepared for you.

| On The First Night Of Class Of Class |
Venue: Unless otherwise stated, classes are located at Western Springs College, 100 Motions Road, Western Springs (opposite Auckland Zoo), Auckland 1022.
Finding Your Classroom: If your class is at Western Springs College, arrive 10 minutes before your class starts at the School Office in the Admin Block just inside the main entrance on the left. Someone will show you where to go.
Parking: You may park inside the school grounds or in the adjoining large car park, opposite the zoo. Lock your car and take your valuables with you.
