Springs College Adult Community Education Classes Charlene Tedrow – Dance, particularly Siva Samoa, was an important part of Charlene Tedrow’s upbringing in Samoa and she loves expressing her culture and creativity through this art form. After moving to New Zealand in 2003, and discovering the opportunities available in the performing arts, she decided to enrol in a Bachelor of Performing Arts (University of Auckland) majoring in Dance. Now in her final semester, the focus of her studies has been on Pacific Island traditional and contemporary dance styles. Her studies have opened up many doors, giving her the confidence to pursue a career as a dance practitioner. It is Charlene’s passionate belief that dance is “good for the soul” and she encourages people from all ethnic groups to gain practical knowledge of Pacific Island dance and experience the enjoyment this dance style offers. Both men and women are welcome to enrol in her classes. Charlene has established her own Polynesian dance company called “Tapu”, formally known as “Ura Tabu”. In 2008, the dance troupe entertained large audiences at New Zealand's premier Fashion Awards - Westfield Style Pasifika and at the Samoan Sports Awards. Western Springs College is delighted Charlene has agreed to offer both Samoan and Cook Island Dance classes as part of our programme. During the final session, both classes will combine to perform the dances they have learnt in front of a family and friends. Your participation in this performance is optional, but it is nothing to be nervous about. It will be in the informal environment of a classroom and promises to be a lot of fun. |
