Music
Active participation in music is the primary aim of the music department, with performance of all styles encuraged and strong participation of the music department in school productions and school events.
Partly as a result of the school's physical and cultural position near the heart of Auckland City, and situated as it is near the confluence of several multi-cultural and 'artistic' suburbs, music is a powerful part of Springs' heartbeat.
Tuition
With Margaret Robertson full time, Springs employs eight specialist tutors. Students are able to participate in small group instrumentatal tuition such as flute, keyoard, piano, saxophone, clarinet, cello, acoustic bass, electric bass, drums, guitar and voice.
Events
Musicians are encouraged to take part in events such as the annual Talent Quest, school productions (which are often open to original compositions) and visits to local schools. There is a school jazz band and choir; musical groups are supported and encouraged with time, practice space and equipment - for example, the three-piece original rock band Treva.
Creativity
Western Springs has a tradition of fostering musical aspirations, with many famous New Zealand acts having their start in the Springs music department - for example, SuperGroove, Ché Fu and Nesian Mystic. Attend an event at Springs - you'll be amazed at the musicianship the school is so justifiably proud of. |
