Sciences

Junior Science
Science is a core subject taken by all Year 9 to 11 students before branching into the separate scientific disciplines in the senior school.

At Springs we have always offered science as a an investigative practical subject set into everyday contexts.

We believe the study of science is important for the understanding of the world around us.

Senior Science
Year 12 Science will be offered in 2004 as an NCEA course covering the main science disciplines. This course is designed for students who wish to maintain a broad general study rather than focus on a single aspect of science.

Physics
The traditional academic courses are offered at Year 12 & 13 and the students have achieved significant academic success in recent years.

We aim to make the courses as practical as possible because we firmly believe that practical understanding of physics improves both interest and academic success in Physics.

Chemistry
The traditional academic courses are offered at Year 12 & 13. The highlight of Year 12 in recent years has been wine making. Wine making offers a context that gathers the students’ interest and practically teaches a number of different chemical concepts.

The science department at Springs encourages students to take part in a number of different events opportunities such as;

Australian Science Competition
Visits to university lectures such as recent lecture at Massey about Bio Technology and DNA
Using selected juniors to act as demonstrators at MOTAT for the recent Technology Roadshow
CREST award for interested students
Use of senior students as demonstrators in Intermediate visits (the Science Department suspects that the demonstrators enjoyed the experience as much, or more, than the Intermediate students did!)

Biology
At Springs we offer the traditional academic Year 12 & 13 Biology courses.

In Year 12 we focus on the ecology of our surroundings: Western Springs Park and Meola Creek.

At Year 13 level we benefit from a long-term relationship with our close neighbour, the Auckland Zoo.
