Parents and caregivers are an integral part of their children’s education. At Western Springs College we encourage communication between home and school through a variety of avenues:
- An annual barbeque is held early in Term 1 for new families and staff to acquaint themselves. It is a relaxed, informal and friendly occasion.
- Regular report evenings are held so that parents can meet teachers to discuss each student’s progress and, where necessary, to establish direct, ongoing links. Details of report evenings are included in the report mail-out.
- In Term 1, signposting reports are mailed to parents and caregivers indicating each student’s progress.
- Two full reports are completed annually for each level, one in each semester.
- School newsletters are published on the Monday of weeks 3, 6 and 9 each term: they are placed on the school website, and distributed on request in hard copy form from the school office. The first newsletter of the year is posted to parents in mid January.
- Open Week is an opportunity for parents - current or prospective - to visit the college during school hours, meet staff, students and other parents, and observe classes during a conducted tour.
- Enrolments at Western Springs are made by appointment through the college office.
- Parents and caregivers are consulted about students’ courses.
- There is ongoing contact between form teacher, dean and home via telephone or email.
- Our website www.westernsprings.school.nz keeps parents informed of upcoming events.

Parents Action Group (PAG) is one of the outstanding features of Western Springs College. An energetic group of parents, PAG serves as a forum for communication and parent involvement. PAG activities include arranging social events, working bees, parent education evenings, fundraising, and allocating funds to various college projects. Meetings are held monthly and all parents and caregivers are welcome. Meetings are low key and enjoyable. For more information, watch the College’s newsletters, ring the office, or check the website.
Marae Komiti meets the third Wednesday of each month. It includes the whanau associated with Nga Puna o Waiorea as well as staff and board members. Another parent steering group representing Maori mainstream student families also meets each term with a designated deputy principal and Maori management staff to develop and implement strategies for improving student achievement |
